An Introduction to Show, Don't Tell

LIVE ONLINE WORKSHOP

Learn the foundations of 'show, don't tell'

Not sure what exposition in a novel looks like or whether it needs fixing?

This live online workshop introduces beginner and developing fiction editors to shown and told prose.

I'll teach you the foundations so you can identify problems, communicate the issues to your clients, and guide them towards solutions.

By the end of the workshop, you'll understand the following:

> What ‘show, don’t tell’ means
> Why shown and told prose both have a place in fiction
> Educating authors about ‘show, don’t tell’
> Problematic exposition in narrative
> Problematic exposition in dialogue
> When telling interferes with viewpoint
> How told prose can enrich reader experience

This workshop isn't about me talking at you via a lecture. It's an interactive experience that focuses on learning through discussion and practice. That's why in addition to our 2 hours together you'll get lifetime access to additional video content. This will be made available prior to the workshop so you have time to prep.

IS THIS WORKSHOP RIGHT FOR ME?
This workshop is a good fit for anyone who's confused about ‘show, don’t tell’ or who doesn't understand what it means or why it's relevant to the success of a novel. The following people will get the most from it:

  • Experienced non-fiction editors who want to switch to fiction
  • Fiction proofreaders who want to expand their skill set and move into editing
  • Fiction copyeditors with strong technical skills who want to develop stylistic craft

Experienced stylistic fiction editors will likely already know the topic inside out. Unless you're in need of a foundational brush-up, this workshop isn't a good fit for you.
