Roundup: Onscreen Editing/Proofreading Resources

29/1/2012

This Roundup features resources that will be of particular interest to those editors and proofreaders who are new to onscreen work, or to experienced editorial professionals who want to expand their skills. It includes links to useful courses, articles and books.
Courses
  • Efficient editing: Strategies and tactics (SfEP)
  • Practical mark-up of PDFs (SfEP)
  • Editing with Word (SfEP)
  • Writing and Editing for the Web (Publishing Training Centre)
  • Digital Editing (Publishing Training Centre)
  • Editing in Word (Publishing Training Centre)

And my colleague Adrienne Montgomerie has posted the following information in the comments, but just in case you don't read that far, I've repeated it here:

  • The EFA sometimes offers the on-screen editing course Adrienne teaches. Their course catalogue changes each season, but details and links are always on her page: http://blog.catchthesun.net/training/
  • The course is posted as weekly lesson files with video demos, so you do the work whenever it suits you. There are no set lesson times. File distribution and discussions happen via a close email list. It's very accessible technology.
  • Courses are open to all and slanted to the Mac platform using MS Word and the free Acrobat Reader. Adrienne taught PC courses for years, so she can usually troubleshoot on that front, too.

Articles
  • Formatting LaTeX for Onscreen Proofreading (Alex McLean)
  • PDF Editing – Making the Most of the Stamps Tool (The Proofreader’s Parlour)
  • Free Downloadable PDF Proofreading Stamps (The Proofreader’s Parlour)
  • How Does Track Changes in Microsoft Word work? (Shauna Kelly)
  • Edit Faster with Free Macros (Paul Beverley @ Intelligent Editing)
  • The Professional Editor: Working Effectively Online II – The Macros (An American Editor)
  • The Professional Editor: Working Effectively Online III – Mastering Word (An American Editor)
  • The Professional Editor: Working Effectively Online IV – Mastering Macros (An American Editor)
  • Working Effectively Online V – Stylesheets (An American Editor)
  • The Professional Editor: Working Effectively Online VII – Macros Again (An American Editor)
  • The Professional Editor: Working Effectively Online VIII – Macros Redux (Jack Lyon @ An American Editor)
  • Let's Make a Macro! (Subversive Copy Editor)

Books
  • All About PDF Stamps In Acrobat® & Paperless Workflows by Thom Parker
  • Effective Onscreen Editing (Geoff Hart)
  • Macros for Writers and Editors by Paul Beverley
  • Macro Cookbook for Microsoft Word by Jack Lyon

Want to add anything? In particular, specific onscreen editing/proofreading courses from outside the UK would be of interest since well over half the Parlour's visitors are from elsewhere in the world. Please feel free to let us know in the Comments section (or email me and I'll add your recommendations).

Thanks, Adrienne. That's really useful. I'll add that info to the list I posted above, just in case people don't scroll down to the comments.
