Oxford Reference is one of my all-time favourite sites and proofreading tools. Not only does it provide online access to OUP's renowned dictionaries and thesauri; it also has a section for writers and editors that enables full searchable access to the excellent New Hart's Rules and Pocket Fowler's Modern English Usage, two of my well-thumbed bookshelf staples.
If you’re a member of a public library in England and Northern Ireland, you have FREE access to this resource. All you need to log in is your library card number (and the three-letter prefix identifying your county). Otherwise you'll need to pay. An individual subscription costs £42 per year.

Louise, this is great. To have all these free resources at my fingertips is really useful. I'm particularly enjoying the section on word puzzles and spelling games, something else to add to my increasing list of things to do rather than working on my marketing strategy ;)

Hi Deborah. Well, everyone needs a break now and then to refresh themselves! Glad you're finding the resource useful - in more ways than I'd originally intended!

You can have a free subscription to this blog, Gerard! Alas, I have no control over OUP's offerings. Thanks for the heads-up. I've amended the post.
